Millions of people suffer from the effects of insomnia. There are several treatment plans available to help. Physicians most normally prescribe some sort sleeping pills but if you decide you would like to try a more natural approach there are a few things to try before seeing the doctor.

It is important to know that getting the right amount of sleep is a requirement your body needs to function correctly. Although there is no set rule on the amount of hours of sleep an individual needs, suffering from insomnia is proven to cause physical and even emotional trauma.

There are natural ways to help treat insomnia. One of these is to take a warm bath before going to bed. The warm water helps relax your muscles. Drinking a cup of warm milk is also scientifically proven to help individuals fall asleep. Heating milk releases a substance called tryptophan which is a chemical that relaxes the body and can help cause drowsiness. Avoiding alcohol before bed is a good idea. Although the initial effects of the alcohol may cause drowsiness the overall effects are not conducive to a good nights sleep. Avoid products that include caffeine before going to bed.

Many people that suffer from insomnia believe that using an anti-histamine before bed helps them sleep better. Histamine is a chemical that is naturally found in the brain which helps keep us awake and alert. An anti-histamine blocks this and causes drowsiness. Taking an anti-histamine on a continual basis may cause drowsiness during the day and dry nasal passages.

Many believe that using herbs can help treat insomnia. Before purchasing and using this type of treatment speak with you doctor first. Herbal treatments are not addictive like a prescription sleeping medication may be and most can be purchased locally at a grocery or health food store.

Changing your sleep patterns may help treat insomnia. If you are napping during the day it will cause restlessness at night. It is recommended that you try reading a book before going to bed or listening to soft music. You can also develop better sleep patterns by setting an alarm clock to make sure you get up every morning at the same time.
