Insomnia is a common problem. It keeps you active all night. It prevents you from having peace and waking up energized in the morning. When this persists, even your health and social life will be disturbed. Apparently, there are already treatments available for it which range from natural to commercial medications.

Insomnia is not itself a disease. Instead it is a symptom of other illnesses that may bother a person. Take for example stress. Stress can keep you awake all night especially when your stress comes from the lack of money or emotional burden. The emotions that are kept in your mind as well as the thoughts that can linger in it will be enough to keep you awake at night. Insomnia can also be caused by physical causes like hormonal changes in women, decreased melatonin, asthma, allergies and heart diseases.

However, thanks to the advanced medical research of today, there are already many available treatments for insomnia. They can be divided into two, the natural way and that that uses drugs.

Natural remedies
Many experts believe that the first step that a person with insomnia has to do is to make use of the easy steps on sleeping properly. There are many ways to do this actually. First, there is a need to examine oneself and evaluate the root cause of the insomnia. If you are thinking of many things and anxious of things that might happen, then you must unload those worries away. These lingering thoughts in your mind are prime disturbances that will keep your body burdened. You can do yoga, meditate or even have your exercise at night to tire your body.

You must also avoid practices that will logically steal your drowsiness away like drinking alcohol late at night, coffee and soft drinks too for that matter. Do not smoke or chew for these are material things that can give you stimulating caffeine.

As much as possible, do not take naps during the day. Even drinking coffee during the afternoon can still last on the evening. When lying in your bed, take the most comfortable position. Read some good books that will interest you or listen to the sound of a soothing music. Others recommend taking exercise at night to tire the body. Be sure that your room is dark too to encourage your eyes to sleep. You can also take a satisfying bath or shower before you lay in your bed. Dress the most comfortable cloth and fabric so all you can feel is ease and comfort. Think also of the things that you find exciting the next day to keep encourage your body to get the good sleep it deserves.

Medications
Although this is not necessarily encouraged by doctors, they apply this when the insomnia becomes chronic. However, these drugs can only be taken with the advice and prescription of the doctor. This includes sedatives as well as melatonin. Melatonin can be taken as drugs to increase the body's level of relaxation and thus encourage the body to sleep well.

There are also physiologists who perform hypnosis for the same purpose. But as mentioned, it is better to apply the natural remedies first before resorting the latter not only because it will cost you lesser but also because it can do you more good to be natural.
